TEHRAN, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Iran plans to build nuclear-powered submarines capable of operating in international waters, the navy commander said Thursday.

Nuclear-powered submarines are capable of operating in international waters for long periods of time without frequent refuelling, Hossein Khanzadi was quoted as saying by state TV.

The plan is in line with the country's defensive agenda, he added.

Iran has already built a 600-tonne Fateh (Conqueror) submarine that can operate for five weeks at a submerged depth of 200 meters.

The homemade submarine is equipped with torpedoes, naval mines as well as cruise missiles. Enditem
