NICOSIA, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Health workers took the brunt of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, being the category most affected, according to the latest data quoted by a Health Ministry advisor on Saturday.

An epidemiological study by specialists showed that over 100 health workers in the front line against the virus had been infected, accounting for more than one fifth of the total infections, up to Tuesday when the study was prepared, Georgios Nikolopoulos, an assistant professor of Epidemiology at the University of Cyprus, told state radio.

He said a total of 37 doctors, 83 nurses and 31 members of auxiliary hospital staff were infected, with more infections reported after the study was prepared.

The health minister and other ministry officials have time and again praised health workers for their dedication to their duty. They pointed out that it was natural to see many infections among them, as they were soldiers in the battle against the virus.

Considering their vital role in the fight with the pandemic, the infections among health workers are afraid of inflicting bigger loss. The first doctor infected in the public hospital of the western city of Paphos became the primary source of the spread of the infection, which forced the evacuation and days-long shutdown of the hospital after a total of 49 people working there were infected.
