LUSAKA, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Wednesday said the government plans to buy more than one million tons of maize for strategic reserves when the marketing season starts.
The Zambian leader said the government wanted to take advantage of this year's bumper harvest of maize as the weather pattern next year can not be predicted because of climate change.
The Zambia leader, in remarks delivered after he visited maize storage sheds at the Food Reserve Agency (FRA), asked the finance minister to quickly release funds for maize purchase, according to a release from his office.
He further reiterated that the country is food secure, adding that the FRA has enough maize to feed the country. Enditem
