LAGOS, April 30 (Xinhua) -- A total of 39 people had died of Lassa fever since the beginning of this year in the northeastern state of Bauchi, an official said late Wednesday.
"On the issue of Lassa fever, 39 people have lost their lives since January till date, but currently, we have only one case on admission and he is about to be discharged," State Commissioner for Health Aliyu Maigoro disclosed this at a news conference in Bauchi city, the state capital.
"We have stayed for almost four to five weeks now without anybody being admitted for Lassa fever in the state," he added.
According to him, the state governor has supported the campaign against Lassa fever long before the COVID-19 pandemic and that was what really helped in intensifying the effort.
"We have gone up to zero with Lassa fever in the state," he said.
Lassa fever is reportedly transmitted when saliva, urine and excreta of rats come into contact with humans. In some cases, it has similar symptoms as malaria.
Recent epidemiological data show that Lassa fever usually occurs in the country during the dry season between January and April. Enditem
