Confirmed COVID-19 cases rise in Asia-Pacific as Bangladesh reports 969 new cases

HONG KONG, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Asia-Pacific countries, home to nearly 60 percent of the world's population, are still witnessing a growing outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic on Tuesday with Bangladesh reports 969 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the country's total cases to 16,660.

Bangladesh confirmed 11 more fatalities from the COVID-19 Tuesday, bringing the country's death toll to 250.

Nasima Sultana, a senior health ministry official, told an online media briefing in Dhaka that "969 new COVID-19 positive cases and 11 deaths including seven men and four women were reported in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh."

She said the number of confirmed infections in the country totaled 16,660 while fatalities stood at 250.

Some 280 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Afghanistan within the past 24 hours, the country's Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) said on Tuesday.

"The laboratories of MoPH tested 741 suspected ceases out of which 280 ceases were tested COVID-19 positive in 24 of 34 Afghan provinces," the ministry said in a statement.

Malaysia reported 16 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the national total to 6,742, the health ministry said.

This marks the lowest number of new cases reported in a day since the government imposed a movement control order on March 18.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said at a press briefing that of the new cases, 13 are local transmissions while three are imported cases.

In the largest single day spike in COVID-19 cases, Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population on Tuesday reported 57 new cases, bringing the total number of cases in the Himalayan country to 191.

The last single day largest spike was on Monday when the ministry reported 24 new cases. In the last five days, the COVID-19 cases in Nepal almost doubled, according to the statistics of the Ministry of Health and Population.

The Indonesian government reported that 16 new deaths of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) were registered on Tuesday, raising the total fatalities in the archipelagic country to 1,007, the highest in Southeast Asia.

Jakarta, home to some 10 million people, suffers the highest number of deaths totaling 443, followed by East Java 155, West Java 98, Central Java 66, Banten 56 and the rest recorded in other areas.

There were 484 new confirmed cases of the COVID-19 in the country, bringing the total number of infections to 14,749.

Alison McMillan, Australia's Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, said on Tuesday afternoon that the country's number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has increased by 18 in 24 hours to 6,964.

Almost all of the new cases were in Victoria, where restrictions will begin to ease on Tuesday night, while New South Wales (NSW), the hardest-hit state, has recorded its first day with zero new case since the pandemic began.

The Philippines' daily tally of new coronavirus infections rose by 264 on Tuesday, increasing the total number of COVID-19 cases to 11,350.

The Department of Health (DOH) said in a report that 107 more patients have recovered from the disease, bringing the number of recoveries to 2,106. It said that 25 more patients have died from the COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 751.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases linked to the cluster infection from clubs and bars at a multicultural neighborhood of Itaewon in the South Korean capital Seoul rose to 102 as of midday Tuesday local time, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

It was up 16 compared to 24 hours earlier. Of the total, 64 were Seoul residents and 23 were residents of Gyeonggi province surrounding Seoul.

India on Tuesday morning reported 87 new deaths from COVID-19, and 3,604 positive cases since Monday, taking the number of deaths to 2,293 and total cases to 70,756.

On Monday morning, the number of infections in the country was 67,152, and the death toll was 2,206.

New Zealand reported no new cases on Tuesday, with the total number of confirmed and probable cases remaining at 1,497, as the country is poised to restart economy.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield told a press conference the death toll remained at 21 in the country, and 93 percent of the country's cases have recovered from the virus.

Singapore's Ministry of Health reported 486 new positive cases on Monday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 23,822.

Of the newly confirmed cases, three were cases in the community, two were work permit holders residing outside dormitories, and 481 were work permit holders residing in dormitories. Enditem
