Hamilton tops British sports stars in 2020 Sunday Times Rich List

LONDON, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Six-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has been named the wealthiest sportsman in the U.K., with wealth totaling 224 million pounds, revealed by the 2020 Sunday Times Rich List.

It is believed that the 35-year-old driver increased his wealth by 37 million pounds over the past 12 months, and a possible contract extension with Mercedes could mean a lucrative boost for the future.

Golfer Rory McIlroy was the only other sportsman in the top 1,000, with a fortune worth 170 million pounds, but sporting stars dominated the Young Rich List (for individuals aged 30 or under), claiming 18 of the 50 places.

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale was the richest young sports star in Britain with wealth totaling 114 million pounds, while boxer Anthony Joshua, worth 107 million, was the only other athlete in the Young Rich List to break the 100 million pound barrier.

Five Manchester United players feature on the on the list, including Nigerian forward Odion Ighalo. The 30-year-old, who is on loan at Old Trafford from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua, was reported to be worth 18 million pounds.
