BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BRUSSELS -- With an increase of 47 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the novel coronavirus had caused a total of 9,005 deaths in Belgium since the beginning of the epidemic, said the public health institute Sciensano on Saturday.

MADRID -- The Spanish Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Welfare confirmed on Saturday falls in the number of new deaths from COVID-19 as well as new cases.

The total number of deaths in Spain rose to 27,563 after 102 people lost their lives to COVID-19 in the 24-hour period until 21:00 hours local time (1900 GMT) on Friday.

This was the lowest number of deaths in a 24-hour period since March 16, with 50 of the deaths in the regions of Madrid and Catalonia.

CAIRO -- The Egyptian authorities received on Saturday the third batch of medical aid from the Chinese government to help the North African country with its fight against the COVID-19 epidemic.

Delivered at Cairo international airport, the third batch of medical supplies, which weighs over 35 tons, includes 1 million medical surgical face masks, 180,000 N95 masks, 90,000 sets of medical protective clothing, 80,000 testing reagents, 70,000 pairs of disposable surgical gloves and 1,000 sets of thermometers.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Another 73 COVID-19 patients were cured and discharged from hospital in Malaysia over the past day, pushing the recovery rate to 80.2 percent, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.

Malaysia has seen its COVID-19 cases on decline since the government imposed a Movement Control Order on March 18. The restrictions were eased on May 4 to allow most economy to reopen, but activities involving large gathering are still banned and schools remain closed.

BANGKOK -- Thailand reported no new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the second time in one week.

Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the government's Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) reported the new development on Saturday. No new fatalities was also reported.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 930 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, dipping from Friday's high of 1,202.

A total of 930 new COVID-19 positive cases and 16 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh, Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana told a media briefing on Saturday afternoon in Dhaka.

BERLIN -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Germany increased by 620 within one day to 173,772, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Saturday.

According to the RKI, the number of deaths from COVID-19 in the country increased by 57 to 7,881 on Saturday.

TEHRAN -- Iran on Saturday registered 35 new deaths over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 6,937, according to state TV.

During an online press conference, Kianush Jahanpur, head of Public Relations and Information Center of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, confirmed 1,757 new infection cases, taking the total cases to 118,392.

CANBERRA -- South Australia (SA) has achieved a milestone in the fight against coronavirus with zero active cases.

SA on Friday became the first Australian state to have no known active cases of COVID-19 since January, joining the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in achieving the milestone.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia on Saturday announced 529 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections in the Southeast Asian country to 17,025.

There were also 13 new deaths, taking the total number of fatalities to 1,089, the government's spokesperson for the COVID-19-related matters Achmad Yurianto said at a press conference.
