NAIROBI, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Sunday confirmed 57 new cases of coronavirus as the total number of infections increased to 887.
Cyrus Oguna, the government spokesperson said in a statement issued in Nairobi that the 2,198 samples were tested in the last 24 hours.
Oguna said that 34 of the positive cases are male while 23 female and the youngest being two years old and the oldest at 61 years.
He observed that the coastal city of Mombasa that has been placed under a partial lockdown have 35 case followed by Nairobi with 17 cases.
The official revealed that some 12 Tanzania truck drivers who tested positive at Lunga Lunga and Taveta border points in the coastal region were referred back to their country.
"We are happy to note that 12 patients have been discharged from hospital, bringing the total number of people who have so far recovered from COVID-19 to 313, while those who have succumbed to the disease remains 50," Oguna said in a statement.
He noted that so far Kenyan medical personnel have tested 43,712 samples since the disease was reported in the country on March 13.
As part of a measure to help contain the spread of the disease, the government has banned international and domestic flights, closed learning institutions, religious gatherings and stopped movements into and out of Nairobi, and the coastal city of Mombasa, and Kilifi and Kwale and Mandera counties.
The government on Saturday closed Tanzania and Somalia borders as part of the measures to help reduce the spread of the deadly respiratory disease.
The East African nation also extended a dust-to-dawn curfew which will run for another 21 days to help contain the spread of the virus. Enditem
