Adverse weather caused by cyclone "Amphan" affects over 9,000 people in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Over 9,000 people have been affected by days of heavy rains and strong winds across Sri Lanka caused by cyclone "Amphan" which has also resulted in two deaths, the Disaster Management Center said in its latest update here Wednesday.

According to official statistics, 9,716 people have been affected by adverse weather conditions while over 1,000 people have been relocated to safer shelters.

DMC Spokesperson Pradeep Kodippili said there were minor flood situations reported in several areas across the country and many major reservoirs had reached the minimum flood level.

Disaster Management officials had warned those living in low lying areas to evacuate immediately if more rains are to continue and all residents had been informed to maintain health guidelines while evacuating due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The National Building Research Organization has also issued a landslide warning for several areas across the country and residents were told to evacuate immediately if the warnings reached a red level.

The Meteorological Department has warned of more rains in the next 24 hours due to cyclone "Amphan" which is now reported to be moving away from the country.

People have been told to remain cautious while fishermen have been banned from going out to sea until further instructions. Enditem
