Ex-long jump world champion Manyonga charged for breaking lockdown rules

JOHANNESBURG, May 23 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's former world long jump champion Luvo Manyonga has been charged for breaking COVID-19 lockdown restrictions and public drinking, local media reported on Friday.

According to local police, 29-year-old Manyonga had been "given a Notice to appear in court for Contravening Disaster Management Act regulations" in the town of Stellenbosch on Wednesday. His offence is labeled as "failure to confine himself in his place of residence and public drinking". He is expected to appear in court on June 29.

Manyonga grabbed the long jump gold medal at the 2017 World Championships in London with a winning distance of 8.48 meters. He also set the African record of 8.65 meters in 2017 and finished second at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Enditem
