JERUSALEM, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Israeli researchers have developed an innovative coronavirus face mask which disinfects itself for multiple use, the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) said Sunday.

The mask, developed by Technion researchers, includes an internal layer of carbon fibers, which are homogeneously dispersed within the mask.

The disinfection is based on heat produced in the carbon fiber layer using a low two-ampere current, from a standard source such as a portable charger, USB connection or cellular charger.

Thus, the mask is heated in a controlled process that destroys the viruses accumulated on it during the day and prepares it for reuse.

The researchers have manufactured and tested a prototype of the mask, which is operated with a connection to a mobile phone charger.

According to the Technion, such efficient and innovative masks can help countries deal with the shortage of masks amid the coronavirus pandemic. Enditem
