MAPUTO, May 25 (Xinhua) -- President of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi said Monday that conflicts continue to be an obstacle to the progress of African continent, and goals will not be achieved if guns are not silenced.

The Mozambican head-of-state was addressing the nation in Maputo as part of the celebration of the Africa Day, which marks the 57th anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity, the predecessor of African Union.

"This year's theme: 'silencing weapons to create favorable conditions for the development of Africa' was set in recognition of the need to promote peace and conditions for sustainable and inclusive development, which will never materialize if there are conflicts," said the president.

He highlighted the terrorist attacks in northern Mozambique as an example that those threats make it impossible to realize the common dream of prosperity.

The president promised his country will contribute to peace promotion, economic and social integration of the region and continent, as Mozambique is expected to assume the rotating presidency of the Southern African Development Community later this year.

Nyusi also said that African countries should come together and coordinate approaches to fight COVID-19, for an effective response that will allow economic recovery and sustainable growth. Enditem
