Senegal reports 92 new COVID-19 cases as tally rises to 3,253

DAKAR, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Senegalese Ministry of Health and Social Action reported 92 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bring the total number of cases to 3,253 in the country.

A total of 961 tests were carried out in the past 24 hours, Marie Khemesse Ngom Ndiaye, director-general of health at the Ministry of Health and Social Action, told a daily briefing.

There were 80 follow-up contact cases and 12 community transmission cases, a significant rise compared with Tuesday's numbers, she said.

She also announced that 21 more patients were cured, bring the total recoveries to 1,586, adding that the death toll rose to 38 across the country.

The number of patients in intensive care units also slightly rose to 20.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic on March 2, Senegal has reported a total of 3,253 confirmed cases, including 2,869 follow-up contact cases, 89 imported ones and 295 community-transmission ones.

According to Chinese Embassy in Senegal, a third batch of medical supplies from Chinese government to Senegal is expected to arrive in the end of May or beginning of June.

Senegalese president Macky Sall asked on Sunday the population to stay vigilant and respect preventive measures to contain the spread of the new coronavirus, after the country's total confirmed cases crossed the 3,000 mark.

Senegal, isolating itself from March 20, is in a state of emergency until June 2 with a curfew imposed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. It is also mandatory, like in many other countries in West Africa, to wear masks at all public places. Enditem
