BUCHAREST, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Romanian Prime Minister Ludovic Orban announced late Thursday that the country will adopt new relaxation measures from June 1, including reopening open-air terraces of restaurants and beaches, lifting the travel restrictions for residents, as well as allowing outdoor shows and sports events.

According to a government decision signed by the prime minister, social distance must be maintained in outdoor activities. A minimum 2-meter distance is required between sunbeds on beaches and restaurant tables on terraces, with a maximum of four people at a table.

Outdoor shows, public and private festivals will also be allowed with the participation of up to 500 people with requirements of wearing a mask and respecting the minimum 2-meter distance.

Traveling will be fully free from June 1, when international road and rail transport will be resumed under distancing and hygiene conditions, according to the prime minister.

Meanwhile, professional athletes will be allowed to train in enclosed spaces, with the observance of the distancing rules. Open-air competitions will become possible, if they are not contact sports and run without audience.

Earlier in the day, President Klaus Iohannis urged caution from the population, given that the epidemic in the country is still at the plateau.

"We cannot talk about a significant reduction in the epidemic. Consequently, the watchword is caution, caution, caution," Iohannis stressed.

Romania adopted the first relaxation measures after the end of the state of emergency on May 14, when residents were allowed to travel locally with requirements of mask-wearing in enclosed public spaces and on public transport. Meanwhile, parks reopened, while shops with access directly to the street, barbers, beauty salons, dentists and museums resumed business.

Romania reported its first COVID-19 case on Feb. 26. The country reported 197 new confirmed cases on Thursday, bringing its total infections to 18,791, with 1,235 fatalities. Enditem
