KIGALI, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda and the United States on Thursday signed an agreement aimed at strengthening existing military cooperation between the two countries.

The agreement, dubbed Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), was signed in Rwandan capital Kigali by Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Vincent Biruta and U.S. Ambassador to Rwanda Peter Vrooman.

The new agreement is broader than a 2005 deal that covers areas of mutual support in military logistics, supplies and services, the Rwandan Defense Ministry said in a statement.

It added that Thursday's document covers U.S. personnel and U.S. contractors, who may be temporarily present in Rwanda in connection with ship visits, training exercises, humanitarian activities, and other activities approved by both sides. Enditem
