BERLIN, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Daichi Kamada's late goal ended Eintracht Frankfurt's winless run of six games and edged wasteful Wolfsburg 2-1 in the Bundesliga's 29th round of matches on Saturday.

Both sides made a careful start to the game and focused on their defense, meaning goalscoring chances were at premium in the opening period.

With 20 minutes played Wolfsburg created the first clear-cut opportunity as Josip Brekalo's long-range effort forced Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp into action.

The opener was scored at the other end though, as Marin Pongracic felled Andre Silva inside the box for a penalty. Silva stepped up and kept his nerve from the spot to break the deadlock against the run of the play.

Wolfsburg responded well and piled on the pressure but neither Xaver Schlager nor Wout Weghorst were able to restore parity despite promising chances before half-time.

After the restart, the Wolves started where they left off and were rewarded with the equalizer in the 58th minute after Kevin Mbabu nodded home Maximilian Arnold's free-kick.

The visitors gained momentum and should have grabbed the lead but Pongracic failed to score from eight meters with all the time and space in the world at the hour mark.

Frankfurt showed no initiative but nevertheless they were able to score once again out of the blue, as Bas Dost's header allowed Kamada to tap home the winner in the 85th minute.

The Eagles stood firm and were able protect their 2-1 lead to the final whistle, despite the late dismissal of Lucas Torro in the dying minutes of the game.

With the result, Frankfurt jump to 12th place while Wolfsburg stay 6th in the Bundesliga standings.

"It is a vital victory for us. That doesn't mean that we are out of the relegation battle. We staged a good defensive performance and that was important today," Frankfurt's head coach Adi Hutter said.

Elsewhere, Hertha Berlin extended their unbeaten run to four games after beating Augsburg 2-0.

Leonardo Bittencourt's goal helped Werder Bremen to clinch crucial points against Schalke, who have not won for 11 matches, and Hoffenheim extended their winning run to two games after beating Mainz 1-0 thanks to Ihlas Bebou's goal.

Sunday's matches see Borussia Monchengladbach host newly promoted Union Berlin, and bottom side Paderborn face second-placed Borussia Dortmund. Enditem
