35 cases in COVID-19 cluster infection in German city Gottingen

BERLIN, May 31 (Xinhua) -- German broadcaster NDR reported on Sunday a COVID-19 cluster infection in connection with several celebrations in German city Gottingen, as at least 35 people have been infected and 160 in home quarantine.

Among the infected, one is seriously ill and hospitalized. The infected are from several families whose members had attended several private parties, according to the NDR.

The outbreak in Gottingen is among a slew of local outbreaks of COVID-19 recently in Germany, including outbreaks following a church service in Frankfurt and a restaurant reopening in Leer.

Germany recorded 286 new COVID-19 infections within one day, which brought the total number of infections in the country to 181,482, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Sunday.

According to the RKI, the federal government agency for disease control and prevention, German's death toll from COVID-19 increased by 11 to 8,500 on Sunday.

The estimated number of people in Germany who had recovered from the virus-caused disease increased by around 400 within a day to 165,200, according to the RKI. Enditem
