MUMBAI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Renowned Indian filmmaker Basu Chatterjee passed away on Thursday at the age of 93 in Mumbai following old-age ailments.

"I am extremely grieved to inform you all the demise of Legendary Filmmaker Basu Chatterjee ji. His last rites will be performed today. Will miss you Sir," tweeted Ashoke Pandit, President of Indian Film and TV Directors' Association.

Chatterjee worked in over 40 films in Hindi and regional language Bengali cinema, dealing with light-hearted stories of middle-class urban families along with exceptional films on social and moral issues during the 1970-80s.

Although action movies were great successes at the theaters at that time, his films were progressive and easy-going about every-day life with romantic stories captured in public buses, trains or offices.

His 1986 film Ek Ruka Hua Faisla was an Indian adaptation of American film Twelve Angry Men directed by Sidney Lumet.

"Sad to hear of the demise of Shri Basu Chatterjee. His works are brilliant and sensitive. It touched people's hearts and represented the simple and complex emotions, as well as struggles of people. Condolences to his family and innumerable fans. Om Shanti," said India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his condolence tweet. Enditem
