CHENGDU, June 6 (Xinhua) -- More wild giant pandas have been captured on camera at a pilot giant panda national park, authorities said on Friday.

Of the 2,337 infrared cameras installed at the Giant Panda National Park, 383 cameras have taken 2,586 photos and filmed 8,817 seconds of video footage of the chubby bears in the past six months. The figures are much higher than in the same period in previous years, according to the administration of the park.

Xiang Kewen, head of the administration, said that the frequent appearance of the wild pandas on camera is a sign that the environment in the park is healthy and sound, and that the panda population there is reproducing and developing well.

"In recent years, the park has enhanced investment for facilities for monitoring and environmental protection and we also strengthened patrolling efforts," Xiang said. "The habitat of the giant pandas keeps improving."

The administration has invested almost 4.7 billion yuan (about 663 million U.S. dollars) to enhance ecological protection and restoration efforts.

"We plan to improve the quality of infrared cameras and increase their numbers to better our database," Xiang said. "We will also build a comprehensive monitoring platform."

China began piloting the park in 2017. After pilot work ends this year, it will officially become one of the first groups of national parks in China.

The Giant Panda National Park has about 1,631 wild giant pandas. Enditem
