TUNIS, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The Tunisian maritime guard recovered 20 bodies of illegal African immigrants who drowned off Kerkennah Islands in the southeastern province of Sfax, the private radio station Mosaique FM reported Tuesday.
The public prosecutor at the Sfax Court decided to launch an investigation into the incident.
"According to the initial investigation, a boat left the coast of Sfax on Thursday night toward the Italian coast, with 53 illegal immigrants on board," said Mosaique FM.
The search is still underway for the remaining migrants.
Tunisia, located in the central Mediterranean, is one of the main points of access to Europe through irregular channels.
The number of attempts of illegal immigration from the Tunisian coasts toward Italy has been increasing despite the strict measures by the Tunisian authorities to combat the problem. Enditem
