RIGA, June 9 (Xinhua) -- A massive outage left over 160,000 households in Riga and the vast regions around the Latvian capital city without electric power on Tuesday morning, local media reported.
Latvia's transmission system operator Augstsprieguma Tikls confirmed that a technical malfunction was detected in a 330 kV power grid after a power cable connecting a combined heat-and-power plant and a substation in Riga failed.
The power outage also disrupted public transport in Riga. Pasazieru Vilciens passenger carrier reported disruptions of electric train traffic on one of its railway lines.
It took about an hour and a half for the transmission system operator to gradually restore power supply to large territories in Riga and its region, as well as the central Latvian districts of Limbazi, Sigulda and Ogre.
The State Revenue Service said its digital systems were temporarily paralyzed due to the blackout. Enditem
