TEHRAN, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Former Iran's national team captain Javad Nekounam dreams of becoming head coach of Iran national soccer team in the future, Tehran Times daily reported on Saturday.

"Everyone wants to reach such a level to become the coach of the national team. If I deserve it, I hope I can promote to such a position," Nekonam, the current head coach of Iran's Foolad Khuzestan, was quoted as saying.

Regarding the rows over the former Iran national team head coach, Marc Wilmots, Nekonam said: "Wilmots's era in the Iranian football is over."

By picking Wilmots as Iran's national soccer coach, "we made mistakes that hit our football. I hope by correcting these mistakes, we will be able to return to our good days."

Wilmots was appointed in May 2019 to lead Iran in their quest for a sixth World Cup appearance, but left his position after six matches in charge in early December.

Under coaching of Wilmots in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, Iran lost to Bahrain and Iraq in Group C that left Iran in the third place in the group. Enditem
