Nigeria's police chief confirms arrest of 799 suspects of rape cases

LAGOS, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's police chief Mohammed Adamu on Monday said about 799 suspects had been arrested in connection with rape cases in the country between January and May.

Addressing reporters in Abuja, the police chief said incidents of rape and other gender-based violence have been around but have escalated during the COVID-19 lockdown.

He said between January and May, about 717 rape incidents were reported across the country, adding that the police arrested about 799 suspects in connection with rape cases.

He told reporters that during the period 631 cases had been conclusively investigated and charged to court while 52 cases are still under investigation.

Adamu urged all Nigerians to speak up against cases of rape or any form of molestation, as the police would continue to deal decisively with such cases promptly.

According to him, the government is going into partnership with all stakeholders within West Africa, to tackle the menace. Enditem
