LUSAKA, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Zambia swung into action and seized products from some chain stores suspected of containing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), a government agency regulating GMOs said on Tuesday.
The National Bio-Safety Authority seized the products worth 80,000 Zambian Kwacha (about 4,440 U.S. dollars) from chain stores in Lusaka, the country's capital. The products were being sold without a permit.
Sandra Lombe, a spokesperson for the regulator said the agency during its spot and compliance checks discovered that the chain stores were trading in some products which may contain GMOs that were not granted permits.
She said the agency was disappointed that despite the stores being aware of the process and procedure on how to import and place on the market products which may contain GMOs, they chose to disregard the law.
Even though Zambia does now allow GMOs, enterprises that want to buy products containing GMOs must apply for a permit. Enditem
