KIEV, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine confirmed 735 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 36,560, the country's health ministry said Sunday.

A total of 16,509 patients have recovered, while 1002 people have died, the ministry said.

Ukraine celebrated Medical Worker Day on Sunday, which was established in 1994 and is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June.

Ukrainian Health Minister Maxym Stepanov told a daily briefing here on Sunday that 5,998 medical workers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Ukraine during the pandemic, while 3,639 have recovered.

Since June 11, Ukraine has registered an alarming rise in new COVID-19 cases, which the health ministry attributed to members of the public easing protective measures.

Due to the high infection rate, the Ukrainian government on Wednesday extended adaptive quarantine measures until July 31, which began on May 22. Enditem
