Africa's COVID-19 cases exceed 306,000-mark: Africa CDC

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the African continent reached 306,567 as of Monday afternoon.

ADDIS ABABA, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the African continent reached 306,567 as of Monday afternoon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC in its latest situation update said that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across Africa rose from 297,352 on Sunday afternoon to 306,567 as of Monday afternoon, eventually registering some 9,215 new COVID-19 positive cases across the continent during the stated period.

The continental disease control and prevention agency also disclosed that the death toll from the pandemic also rose from 7,925 on Sunday afternoon to 8,115 as of Monday afternoon.

The Africa CDC, which noted that the virus had spread into 54 African countries, said that some 146,212 people who were infected with COVID-19 had recovered across the continent as of the stated period.

Amid the rapid spread of COVID-19 across the African continent, the highly affected African countries include South Africa with 97,302 confirmed cases, Egypt with 55,233 confirmed cases, Nigeria with 20,244 confirmed cases, Ghana with 14,154 confirmed cases, Cameroon with 11,892 confirmed cases as well as Algeria with 11,771 confirmed cases, it was noted.
