VILNIUS, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The municipality of Lithuania's capital Vilnius has decided to set up a beach on Lukiskiu Square right in the middle of the city, the local authorities said on Monday.

The sandy "beach" will come complete with beach loungers, sun shades, a beach volleyball court, a changing room and a screen with a view and sound of the sea.

"Southern European resorts have become less open this year, while beaches at the Baltic Sea will be overcrowded. We invite the residents and the guests of our city to spend their holidays in Vilnius," Remigijus Simasius, mayor of Vilnius, was quoted as saying in a statement released by the municipality.

The 1,660-square-meter artificial beach located not far from the building of parliament will be open from next Tuesday until the end of this summer.

In the winter season, an ice skating rink is traditionally set up in Lukiskiu Square, but this is the first time for it to be transformed into a beach. Enditem
