WELLINGTON, June 29 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand reported two new cases of COVID-19 on Monday in managed isolation, who have recently returned from overseas, bringing the total active cases in the country to 22, according to the country's Ministry of Health.

Both of the new cases are now in quarantine in Auckland, said a ministry statement.

Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to accelerate and new cases were always expected at the border, Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield told a press conference.

New Zealand's strict border controls, in particular the 14-day stay in managed isolation or quarantine, ensure that arrivals are being managed with appropriate public health protocols and are isolated from other New Zealanders while they may be or become infectious, Bloomfield said.

New Zealand's total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 stands at 1,178. The number of COVID-19 related deaths in New Zealand was 22. Enditem
