KIGALI, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda on Monday reported 101 new confirmed COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, a record single-day increase of more than 100 cases in the central African country.

The increase brought the national tally to 1,001, according to the daily update of the COVID-19 pandemic issued by the Health Ministry.

Seventy-two new cases were from a cluster in a detention center in Ngoma district in eastern Rwanda, 22 cases were reported in the capital city Kigali, three in the district of Rusizi, and two in Rubavu, said the update.

The Kayonza and Kirehe districts in the east each had one case, it said.

"We shall continue to see new cases as people move around," Sabin Nsanzimana, director general of Rwanda Biomedical Center, told Xinhua.

He urged the public to adhere to health ministry guidelines, including COVID-19 prevention measures, in order to contain further spread of the novel coronavirus in the country.

"We are concerned for people who are not respecting COVID-19 prevention measures such as proper use of face masks, keeping social distance and frequent hand washing habits. If these are well implemented, new clusters of cases will be managed," he said.

Of the total cases in Rwanda, 443 have recovered and two died from COVID-19, according to the ministry. Enditem
