ACCRA, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Ghana started voter registration for this year's presidential election on Tuesday with strict COVID-19 prevention measures in force.
In Tema, a major port city in Ghana, prospective voters had formed long winding queues as early as 5 a.m. local time waiting for the registration officials to commence the exercise at 7 a.m.
A visit to some of the registration centers in the eastern port city and its environs by Xinhua early in the morning saw officials setting up the polling centers for the commencement of the exercise.
At the Chemu Senior High School (SHS) Registration Centre in Tema Community 4, the exercise commenced with prospective voters adhering to the COVID-19 safety protocols before being made to go through the registration process.
Benjamin Monyo, who was among the early people to have been registered and issued with an identity card told Xinhua the exercise was smooth and less time-consuming.
"I spent less than 20 minutes to go through the registration process. I am now happy that I have been registered and looking forward to exercising my franchise later in the year," Monyo said.
The atmosphere in Chemu SHS registration center was similar to the Anglican Church Centre at Community 1 as well as Community 5 No. 1 Basic School all in the Tema metropolis as no major problem was encountered during the exercise.
At the Presbyterian Church Registration Centre at Dawenya, scores of potential voters massed up at the premises to register to get their names on the voters roll.
The country's Electoral Commission commenced the registration of eligible voters to compile a new electoral roll.
The West African country will go to the polls on December 7 this year to elect a president and 275 parliamentarians. Enditem
