BANGKOK, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Online sales of alcoholic beverages have been banned by law in Thailand.

The National Alcoholic Beverage Policy Committee on Thursday approved the planned prohibition to the online sales of alcoholic beverages to deter easy access for adolescents aged under 20 years, said Deputy Public Health Minister Sathit Pitutecha.

Reports of purchase orders easily placed online for alcoholic beverages with home delivery services have apparently prompted the authorities to ban such online trading, Sathit commented.

A number of underaged customers were reported to have done so via social media, said the deputy public health minister, who concurrently chairs the committee.

The ban on the online sales of alcoholic beverages is following suit of an existing ban on advertisements of alcoholic beverages on social media under the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act.

Nevertheless, people can legally place purchase orders for alcoholic beverages via social platforms of restaurants where alcoholic drinks are available for sales no matter if they may be consumed in the premises of the restaurants or not, according to the deputy public health minister. Enditem
