State counsellor, president to launch campaign for election in Myanmar

YANGON, July 2 (Xinhua) -- The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party said State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, in her capacity as the chairperson of the NLD party and President U Win Myint as the Vice Chairman of the party will launch campaign from Thursday for the upcoming general election.

The move came after the decision of the party's executives meeting.

The Union Election Commission (UEC) has decided to hold the 2020 General Election on Nov. 8.

The UEC granted candidates who are cabinet members of governmental bodies and deputy ministers to begin campaigning for the election.

The commission also issued the dates to enlist of representatives for respective constituencies from July 20 to Aug. 7 while scrutiny of contestants list will be done on Aug. 11-17.

A total of 330 constituencies will be contested for the House of Representatives (Lower House) while 168 constituencies for the House of Nationalities (Upper House), 644 constituencies for state or region parliaments and 29 constituencies for ethnic minority in state or region parliaments, according to the UEC.

About 37 million people are eligible to vote in the November election and 97 political parties are registered to take part in the vote.

Myanmar's previous general election was held on Nov. 8, 2015, in which Suu Kyi-led NLD party won the absolute majority of the parliamentary seats and ran the government since April 2016.

The five-year term of the incumbent NLD government will end in March 2021. Enditem
