Ghana's forestry commission chief dies of COVID-19

ACCRA, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has confirmed the passing away of the Forestry Commission boss Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, after getting COVID-19.

Akufo-Addo expressed shock and sadness on social media about the death of Owusu-Afriyie.

Sir John died on Wednesday at the Intensive Care Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

"We shall never forget you, Sir John," the president wrote, expressing his condolence to the bereaved family.

Owusu-Afriyie was a also leading member of the ruling party, and he had served as General Secretary from 2010 to 2014.

Meanwhile, local media reported on Thursday that the deputy minister for trade Carlos Ahenkora, and the president's campaign manager for the 2020 general election Peter Mac Manu were both in intensive care after testing positive for the pandemic. Enditem
