ZAGREB, July 6 (Xinhua) -- President of Croatia's Social Democratic Party (SDP) Davor Bernardic resigned on Monday after the defeat in the parliamentary elections, and the SDP will be led by its vice president Zlatko Komadina until party elections.

"I take responsibility for the defeat in the elections and I will no longer run for SDP president," Bernardic told a news conference after an SDP presidency session.

Bernardic shunned the topic about the continuation of his political career, but said that he would come to the first session as an elected member of the Croatian parliament. He announced that the party bodies would make a decision on the election of the new party leadership as soon as possible.

The ruling center-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic won the most seats in the parliamentary elections on Sunday and is expected to form a new government soon.

The HDZ leadership announced that it will immediately begin negotiations to form a coalition, with the most likely partners being eight representatives of minority parties, the Reformists and the Croatian People's Party.

According to the results from the State Electoral Commission after counting over 99 percent of the votes on Monday, the top three winners are HDZ gaining 66 seats in the parliament, the center-left Restart Coalition led by SDP 41 seats, and Homeland Movement, a right-wing party led by singer Miroslav Skoro, 16 seats.
