RAMALLAH, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Palestine on Tuesday said that COVID-19 has claimed the life of an elderly Palestinian man in the West Bank, raising the death toll to 22 in Palestine.

Palestinian Minister of Health Mai al-Kaila said in a press statement that a 72-year-old man from al-Fawar refugee camp near the southern West Bank city of Hebron was declared dead due to COVID-19 infection.

Death toll in Palestine has climbed to 22, including those in the occupied East Jerusalem, since the outbreak of coronavirus in Palestine, she said, adding that most of the deaths were recorded in the West Bank.

Al-Kaila also said that the total number of infections in Palestine has reached 4,786, adding that 665 of them had recovered, and that there are eight cases in critical conditions and are receiving intensive care.

The majority of the cases in the latest surge of the deadly virus is found in the southern West Bank district of Hebron, which is home to over half of the registered cases, according to a Palestinian Health Ministry statement.

As a result, the Palestinian government has renewed a lockdown across the West Bank this week and imposed strict measures and regulations, including shuttering mosques, churches, and private establishments and banning public gatherings.

Earlier on Sunday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas renewed the state of emergency for another 30 days. Enditem
