SHEXIAN, Anhui Province, July 8 (Xinhua) -- The national college entrance exam started in Shexian County, east China's Anhui Province, on Wednesday, one day behind schedule due to rain-triggered floods.

More than 2,000 students sat the exam which started at 9 a.m. in the county.

At one of the exam venues, the second high school of Shexian County, more than 10 buses were organized to transport the examinees there.

"I hope everything will proceed smoothly," said Wang Jianguo, a parent who waited outside the school. His daughter took one of the buses to the site.

After approval by the Ministry of Education, the county's education bureau said, the exams on Chinese language and math originally scheduled on Tuesday will be held on Thursday, with backup exam papers to be used.

Shexian is the only county in China that had the national college entrance exam postponed, as torrential rains had caused severe flooding in the county.

On Tuesday, river water overflowed into downtown streets of the county seat, and most of the examinees were unable to reach their exam venues on time.
