RAMALLAH, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Palestine on Wednesday said that an elderly Palestinian man in the West Bank has lost his life due to COVID-19, bringing the death toll in Palestine to 23.

Palestinian Health Ministry said in a press statement that a 62-year-old man from the southern West Bank district of Hebron died as a result of his infection with the novel coronavirus.

The Health Ministry said that the total COVID-19 cases in Palestine have climbed up to 5,567 after 475 new cases were registered earlier on Wednesday, including 316 cases in Hebron district.

The number of the currently active cases is 4,957, according to the ministry's statement, including 21 patients in intensive care with five of them on respirators.

As a result of the latest upsurge in the number of cases, the Palestinian government has decided to renew the lockdown and precautionary measures on the West Bank.

Earlier this week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas renewed the state of emergency for another 30 days. Enditem
