NANCHANG, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The embankment of a river in east China's Jiangxi Province was breached late Wednesday following continuous torrential rains, forcing over 9,000 residents to evacuate.
A 50-meter dyke section of the Changjiang River collapsed in Poyang Town of Poyang County at 8:35 p.m. Wednesday, affecting 1,000 hectares of farmland in the low-lying area, according to the county's bureau of water resources.
No casualties were reported. More than 600 people were mobilized rushing for the rescue.
As of 1 a.m. Thursday, the water level was still rising, inundating all the farmland of the nearby Daocao Village. Enditem
