JERUSALEM, July 9 (Xinhua) -- An Israeli court convicted on Thursday a Jordanian national of attempting to murder two Israeli divers in the southern resort city of Eilat in November 2018.

Beersheba District Court found Taher Khalef, a Jordanian national, guilty of two counts of attempted murder and terror charges.

Khalef was convicted of hitting the two divers with a hammer, causing them severe injuries.

The court said that Khalef used his work permit, which allowed him to enter into Israel, to carry out "a terror attack."

The conviction was part of a plea deal in which Khalef admitted to the crime. Under the deal, he is expected to be sentenced to 19 years in prison.

This was a rare attack against Israelis carried out by a Jordanian citizen. Enditem
