NEW DELHI, July 10 (Xinhua) -- A suspect who was accused of killing eight policemen last week and nabbed on Thursday was shot dead by the police on Friday as he tried to run away while being taken to the crime scene, police sources confirmed.

Vikas Dubey was arrested from Ujjain district of central state Madhya Pradesh Thursday.

Dubey was being taken to the crime scene in Kanpur district of India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh, where he and his henchmen allegedly killed eight cops, injured several others and escaped on July 3.

According to the police sources, while he was being taken to Kanpur by road, the car in which he was traveling in overturned in an accident. "Taking advantage of the road accident, Dubey tried to snatch cops' arms and run away. The policemen accompanying him fired at him and killed Dubey instantly," a top cop in Kanpur told media.

Three of Dubey's henchmen were nabbed over the past couple of days, out of which two were killed when they were being taken to Kanpur. Enditem
