Coach accident kills 5, injures 35 in Vietnam's central highlands

HANOI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- A passenger coach skidded off a road and plunged into a ravine in Vietnam's central highlands Kon Tum province on Saturday morning, leaving five people dead and 35 others injured.

The accident happened at around 4 a.m. local time on National Highway 14C in Sa Thay district, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Five victims, including a seven-year-old girl, were found dead at the spot. The injured passengers had been taken to the hospitals, with most of them being in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon, according to the report.

The road segment which the coach ran along was still under construction and yet to open for inter-provincial buses at the time the accident occurred, said local transport authorities.

In the first six months of this year, 6,790 traffic accidents occurred in Vietnam, killing 3,242 people, severely injuring 1,931 and lightly hurting 3,008 others, according to the country's Traffic Police Department. Enditem
