RAMALLAH, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Palestine recorded 463 new COVID-19 cases in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number to 6,688 since March 5, the health ministry said Saturday.

The ministry said in an emailed press statement that the new infections are from East Jerusalem and the districts of Ramallah, Hebron, Bethlehem, Jenin and Nablus in the West Bank.

In addition, two new deaths from the coronavirus were recorded in the districts of Bethlehem and Hebron, raising the death toll to 34, according to the ministry statement.

Late on Friday, Health Minister Mai al-Kaila announced that her ministry will send more medical teams to help the hospitals in Hebron, the epicenter of the new COVID-19 wave that hit the region in mid-June.

The Palestinian government has extended the lockdown in the West Bank for another five days, after President Mahmoud Abbas renewed last week the status of emergency for another 30 days. Enditem
