BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A rescue team has been set up in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to assist with outdoor sports-related emergencies, China Daily reported Wednesday.

The first of its kind in Xinjiang, the team will undertake rescue efforts related to accidents during outdoor sports activities including mountaineering and hiking in the region.

The team consists of nine professional outdoor athletes and 54 mountaineers who have obtained professional qualifications from the Chinese Mountaineering Association. The rescue force has been roughly classified into four groups -- a regular group, a reserve group, a coaching group and an advisory group, the paper said.

In recent years, Xinjiang has been a popular destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts for its rich tourism resources, including mountains of different elevations and splendid landscapes. Enditem
