20 killed in rain-related incidents in Pakistan's Punjab province

ISLAMABAD, July 22 (Xinhua) -- At least 20 people were killed and several others injured on Tuesday in different rain-related incidents in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province as the country witnessed torrential monsoon spell, local media reported.

According to the reports, the majority of the deceased lost their lives due to roof collapse incidents caused by heavy rains which continued for hours in different areas of the province.

The roof of a house collapsed due to rain in Tandlianwala area of Faisalabad district of the province, killing seven members of an unfortunate family while injuring five others.

Another incident of roof collapse occurred in a village on the outskirts of Faisalabad, leaving three people including two brothers and their sister dead while injuring four others.

At least three people died in three house collapse incidents in Kasur district, while different districts, including Multan, Pakpattan and Vehari witnessed the electrocution of two persons each, the reports said.

The injured were rushed to hospitals where some of them were reportedly in critical condition.

Chief Minister of Punjab Usman Buzdar expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of lives in the incidents and directed to provide the best medical facilities to the injured. He also held a high-level meeting to view the measures taken by the government to deal with the torrential rains.

Intermittent rains are still pouring in different districts of the country, and people are reportedly facing problems due to power outages, flooding of low-lying areas and inundation of roads and streets causing disruption of traffic. Enditem
