BUCHAREST, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Romania reported 1,295 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the 10th straight day with daily new cases over 1,000, bringing the country's total confirmed cases to 50,886, showed the latest official figures released on Friday.

The daily death toll was 39, raising the tally to 2,343, announced the Strategic Communication Group (GCS), the country's official COVID-19 communication task force.

Meanwhile, another important indicator of the pandemic, the number of critically ill patients reached 400, maintaining a trend of daily record highs for over a week.

Currently, the country has 21,536 active cases and 27,007 recoveries.

The epidemic has rebounded sharply in Romania since mid-June, when the average daily new cases were around 200. To curb the spread, the government has required local governments to impose the mandatory use of face masks at certain hours in crowded outdoor public venues, such as bazaars, bus stops, beaches. Currently, masks are mandatory only in indoor public places and on public transport.

So far, many cities, including the capital Bucharest, have issued relevant regulations to be effective starting Aug. 1. Enditem
