Zhejiang knocks out Shanxi to face Liaoning in CBA quarterfinals (updated)

QINGDAO, China, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Zhejiang Golden Bulls beat the Shanxi Loongs 91-82 in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) playoffs here on Saturday, to set up a quarterfinal clash with the Liaoning Flying Leopards.

Cheng Shuaipeng scored eight points in a row after the tip-off to help Zhejiang establish a 22-18 lead in the first quarter.

Falling behind by 16 points in the second quarter, Shanxi managed to cut the deficit to nine points as the first half ran out.

Cheng then notched seven consecutive points in the third quarter to enlarge the margin to 17 points, and Zhejiang maintained an advantage of around 10 points until the end to move into the quarterfinals.

Cheng and Liu Zeyi got a game-high 23 points apiece for Zhejiang, Wu Qian finished with 18 points, and Lu Wenbo added 13 points.

"Our victory relied on defense and rebounds. We still need to improve the details," said Liu Weiwei, coach of Zhejiang.

Zhang Hanjun had a team-high 17 points for Shanxi, Ren Junwei bagged 14 points and 10 rebounds, Ge Zhaobao collected 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Liu Guancen contributed 12 points.

"Despite the loss, our players tried their best. We have little experience in the playoffs and I believe the young guys have learned a lot from this game," said Shanxi coach Wang Fei. Enditem
