QUITO, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador registered 877 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, with 34 deaths, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 86,232 and deaths to 5,736, the Ministry of Public Health reported on Saturday.

Five months after the pandemic was first detected in Ecuador, the virus continues to spread, with 18 of the country's 24 provinces registering an increase in infections. Due to this rise in cases, new restrictions on mobility were put into action on Friday.

The capital city of Quito in Pichincha province has reported 90 percent of the nation's cases, with 13,438 total cases and 96 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. Authorities attribute the increase in contagion in Quito to residents' non-compliance with the imposed curfew and other preventive health measures.

The rebound in cases in Quito began on June 3 when the city relaxed the quarantine in order to reopen the economy. Enditem
