India's COVID-19 cases surpass 1.8 million, cases in Philippines surge to 106,330

HONG KONG, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- India's COVID-19 cases surpassed 1.8 million on Monday, marking the the fifth consecutive day when more than 50,000 fresh cases were found in the country, while the Philippines, Indonesia and Bangladesh are also reporting mounting cases.

India's health ministry announced that the country's COVID-19 cases have surpassed 1.8 million, reaching 1,803,695.

As many as 52,972 fresh cases were added to the tally in the past 24 hours, according to data released by the ministry.

Meanwhile, 771 deaths took place during the past 24 hours taking the total deaths to 38,135.

A total of 1,186,203 people have been cured and discharged across the country so far, while 579,357 active cases are being treated in hospitals.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 106,330 after the country's Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,226 new cases.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries further rose to 65,821 after it reported that 275 more patients have survived the disease.

The death toll also increased to 2,104 after 46 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, the DOH added.

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 1,679 within one day to 113,134, with the death toll adding by 66 to 5,302, the Health Ministry said.

The ministry also said 1,262 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 70,237.

Bangladesh reported 1,356 new cases, taking the total to 242,102.

Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana told a media briefing that 30 more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across the country, bringing the death toll to 3,184.

She said the total number of recovered patients in the country stood at 137,905, including 1,066 new recoveries.

The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 258 new COVID-19 infections, with the number declining for a second straight day after surging to record peaks last week.

Despite the recent decline in daily infections, Tokyo has remained the epicenter of the outbreak in Japan with cases in July alone totaling 6,466 cases, the highest figure for any month.

The metropolitan government has kept its alert level at the highest on its four-tier scale meaning that "infections are spreading."

From Monday, the metropolitan government has requested that bars, restaurants and karaoke parlors close earlier to help prevent the spread of the virus through August.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Maldives has crossed 4,000 after recording the highest daily rise in cases amid a resurgence of the virus, local media reported.

As many as 215 new cases were confirmed on Sunday, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said, raising the country's total case count to 4,164.

Maldives has been experiencing a resurgence of cases since the country began phasing out lockdown restrictions, including lifting a travel ban and welcoming foreign tourists on July 15.

Papua New Guinea's (PNG) total COVID-19 cases have reached 110, with 19 more cases recorded on Sunday.

PNG's National Pandemic Controller David Manning said most of the new cases were found in the nation's capital of Port Moresby and one was from the country's second biggest city of Lae.

Manning described the increasing rate of new cases as alarming.

South Korea reported 23 more cases of the COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Monday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the country's total number of infections to 14,389.

The daily caseload fell below 30 due to a sharp drop in local infections, but it continued to grow in double digits owing to imported cases.

No more death was confirmed, leaving the death toll at 301. The total fatality rate stood at 2.09 percent.

Malaysia reported two new COVID-19 infections, bringing the national total to 9,001, the Health Ministry said.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press briefing that both cases are local transmissions.

Of the remaining 208 active cases, one is being held in intensive care and none of those are in need of assisted breathing.

New Zealand reported two new cases of COVID-19, with the number of active cases in the country being 27, all in managed isolation and quarantine facilities, according to the Ministry of Health.

It has been 94 days since the last case of COVID-19 was acquired locally from an unknown source, according to the ministry. Enditem
