BUCHAREST, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Border police in northwest Romania have detained 14 foreign citizens who tried to cross the border illegally into Hungary on foot, the General Inspectorate of the Border Police said on Saturday.

Border guards found a group of people walking to Hungary late Friday in Diosig of Bihor County, over 600 kilometers northwest of the capital Bucharest. The group was stopped by police about 250 meters away from the border line with the neighboring country and taken to the police headquarters for investigations, the police said in a statement.

Initial investigation revealed that the group, 10 men, a woman and three minors, are citizens of Iraq and Syria, and they tried to cross the border into Hungary on foot to reach a Western European state, the police said.

The Romanian judiciary began to investigate the incident on charges of attempting to cross the border illegally.

In recent years, Romania has become a springboard for refugees from the Middle East and Africa seeking to enter the Schengen zone via Hungary. Enditem
