Myanmar logs 72 human trafficking cases in 7 months

YANGON, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar logged a total of 72 cases of trafficking in persons in first seven months of this year, according to latest figures released by the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division on Tuesday.

From January to July, 111 people including 21 children were victimized while 208 traffickers were charged in connection of the cases.

Regionally, Yangon region and Shan state registered most trafficking cases with 22 cases each.

According to the anti-trafficking in persons police's data, the cases were named in terms of forced marriage, forced labor and prostitution.

A total of 732 traffickers were charged in connection with 239 human trafficking cases in which 358 people including 297 children were victimized in 2019, the figures said.

Under the Myanmar's Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law, people who smuggle women and children are sentenced to at least 10 years or up to lifetime sentence or fine while money or property received through trafficking will be confiscated by the government. Enditem
